The SunSpaceArt team, led by Life Fellow, Professor Helen Mason OBE, has been awarded the 2025 European Solar Physics Division (ESPD) Kees Zwaan Inspirational Community Prize for their remarkable work in science outreach and education.

The prize recognises the team’s creative and inclusive approach to engaging over 10,000 children across the UK in solar physics and space science through art. Aimed at children aged 7 to 12, particularly in underserved communities, the project uses hands-on workshops to blend scientific discovery with artistic expression, sparking curiosity and confidence among young learners.

According to the ESPD, the team’s sustained impact and innovative methods have made them a model of inspirational outreach. “Their inclusive approach empowers both pupils and teachers, fostering deep engagement with science through creativity,” the committee said in a statement.

The Kees Zwaan Inspirational Community Prize is awarded annually to individuals or groups who demonstrate exceptional dedication to engaging the public with solar physics. The SunSpaceArt project stood out for its effectiveness, reach, and long-term commitment.

Professor Mason and her team expressed gratitude for the honour. She said:

I am thrilled to win this prestigious prize on behalf of the SunSpaceArt team of scientists and artists. Their enthusiasm and creativity is awesome. We thank STFC for their constant support for our project.

Congratulations to the Professor Mason and SunSpaceArt team on this significant achievement.
